The Fantasy Fiction Genre and A New Fantasy Fiction Novel You Won’t Want to Miss
In case you’re new to the Fantasy genre or just happened upon this page, let’s talk about what the Fantasy genre is. Maybe you’ve read a Fantasy novel and didn’t realize that’s what it’s called. Some of the most famous Fantasy novels include “The Hobbit” and “Lord of the Rings” series by J.R.R. Tolkien, The Narnia Series by C.S. Lewis, The Harry Potter Series by J.K. Rowling, and “A Game of Thrones” series by George R.R. Martin. There are many more.
So what is a Fantasy Fiction story? Several things set a Fantasy story apart from other stories. The first and foremost component of a Fantasy story is the world or setting of the story. The story may or may not begin in the “real” world—the world we live in, or it may simply begin in a different world altogether. Because of this, the writer needs to spend quite a bit of time creating the world where the story will take place, known as world building, because the reader needs to be able to picture it in their mind. There needs to be a sense of reality and believability.
Another common component in Fantasy Fiction stories is that the writer introduces unique and fascinating characters—beings we’ve never heard of or imagined before—or they choose to use some mythological creatures we have heard of like fauns, or sprinkle in a few fantasy creatures we have heard of like fairies.
Two more components you will find in most stories of the Fantasy Fiction genre are: 1) there is often some kind of magic or at least one character will have a special power or ability in the story; and 2) generally, Fantasy Fiction stories are longer in length than other stories.
Now that you know the basics of Fantasy stories, allow me to introduce you to a new Fantasy Fiction Novel:
I recently had the pleasure of reading an Advanced Reader Copy of The Spirit of Things by Ben McQueeney to write an honest review of The Spirit of Things. I found the characters engaging and I really enjoyed the story. The Spirit of Things is set in the land of Tellusm, a world Ben McQueeney created. There are creatures there that may seem familiar and some that will not because they have been uniquely created by Ben.
The main character of The Spirit of Things, Fulco, faces challenges that may have been part of your life, like being bullied, making it easy to like and relate to him. His circumstances and interactions with others will sometimes make you laugh, sometimes make you cringe or feel a spark of anger.
Fulco discovers that some of the characters he knows in Tellusm have special powers or knowledge of a power that they can use for their own purposes. He asks questions and eventually learns about Sapience and realizes he has the magical power of Sapience to control the beasts. This gives him the courage and desire to join a Portare team, a sport team where players must ride upon beasts, beat each other with bats, score goals, and influence the outcome of the game with magic.
Behind the scenes in The Spirit of Things there are three gods who watch and fight over the land of Tellusm. It will be interesting to see how these three gods affect Tellusm and the lives of those who live there as this series continues.
I hope you can see how Ben McQueeney has included the typical components of Fantasy Fiction in The Spirit of Things. I encourage you to read The Spirit of Things by Ben McQueeney and experience, not only the components of the Fantasy genre, but also the uniqueness of the characters and story created by Ben McQueeney. The Spirit of Things captured and held my attention from page one to the very end. It also left me wanting more, and so, I am excitedly awaiting the next book in this new Fantasy Fiction series by Ben McQueeney while telling everyone about it.
